Reading at Robertswood

At Robertswood, we encourage children to develop a lifelong love of reading by providing a wide range of enjoyable and meaningful reading opportunities throughout the school day. All children, from Nursery to Year 6, have the opportunity to visit the school library each week, access a wide range of books within their classrooms, and enjoy reading during lunchtimes in our Reading Hut.

EYFS and Key Stage 1

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1), children develop their reading skills through high-quality phonics teaching and have the opportunity to read with an adult three times each week. Children can then take their phonics books home to practise and consolidate their learning.

In addition to their phonics books, children in Years 1 and 2 take home colour-coded reading books that are carefully selected according to their individual reading comprehension ability, ensuring they are appropriately challenged and supported in their reading journey.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2 (KS2), we encourage children to develop independence and a genuine enjoyment of reading by choosing books that interest and inspire them. Alongside this, colour-coded reading books continue to be available to support the development of reading comprehension skills.

Comprehension skills are taught through whole-class reading sessions using high-quality and engaging texts that inspire children and promote a deeper understanding of what they read. Children are supported in developing and articulating their responses through the use of a range of sentence stems, helping them to explain their ideas clearly and confidently.

Reading at Home

We recognise the important role that reading at home plays in developing children's confidence, fluency and enjoyment of reading. Each week, children are encouraged to read at home five times and record their reading in their reading journals.
